DESPERATION RAFT ~

Mor of a funny novelty than anything. Its only advantage is a high level of durability being 10! meaning it can be sunk 10 times, but I reckon it cannot survive a broadside from the weakest ships in the game. The "Going to Pieces" mission for Spain in Capa De Vela lets you captain one of these vessels. I've seen captains use these to cross red zones, possibly to avoid detection. But a fallback vessel works more effectively and has a better chance of surviving or even escaping. If you want to have one of these please dont get ripped off -- never pay more than 1000 Doubloons for one in the Auction House! You could ask most shipwights to make one, they may laugh and offer it for free. My honest opinion for a wee bit more materials I'd take a gunboat or tartine and not waste the materials. This one is certainly available to all captains at any level.

TRUSTY LONGBOAT ~

Slightly better than the Desperation Raft, it can be used to handily tag fleets in the Open Sea. I took one of these out to test its level of detectability and speed crossing the map. During the tests I was able to quickly turn and tag an enemy fleet of 8 frigates, and was even able to survive a couple vollys at a distance of 500 yards before sinking, but not much else. the other drawback is if you put modifications on this longboat to say, enhance her speed and reduce her detectability, you eat up her shopping cargo capacity which is around 6 tons (units) and still not be able to fill all the modification slots. Just another cute novelty with no real practical application in game other than establishing some statistics for the Merchants Launches used by higher level traders in battle to send repairs to allied players. Don't wast your money or materials...

CUTRICK PERIGUAR ~

Historically one of the first Buccaneer Ships, story has it that one of these swept down on a Spanish Galleon during the dead of night and boarded the vessel, taking it by surprise. In POTBS this boat like most of the tiny vessels is at its best just getting from point A to point B quickly with a considerable chance of avoiding detection. It may actualy be able to survive a braodside outside 250 yards (if you want to risk it...). Its capacity is not much better than that of the long boat but it's a tad quicker. It does not require much in materials and does sport 2 swivels so it can put up a tad of a fight but any decent ship would not find it more than a gnat... on the open water she is blazing fast even woithout modificains but other than a novelty you can get more for little materials.

AYLMER LUGGER ~

Historically this craft would be commonly found in river ports and harbors where it would ferry supplies out to bigger vessels. Her deep hull offers 50 tons of cargo space and a bit more sting with 4 Swivels! She is slightly slower than the Periguar but still capable of doing some light hauling for next to no cost and materials. Testing her out she could withstand a few medium to long range vollys from ships twice her size  but in my opinion is not really worth spending money or materials when you can get a small ship that sports a few cannon and double the cargo capacity. In terms of POTBS I think most of these vessels were put in the game to add historical color and fit the needs of certain missions and story lines.
